Day of the Dead Altar for our Mexican journalists murdered in 2023

Fecha: 9 noviembre, 2023

PEN San Miguel honors and mourns these four Mexican journalists murdered this year in Mexico: Jesús Gutiérrez Vergara, Luis Martín Sánchez Íñiguez, Marco Aurelio, Ramírez Hernández and Nelson Matus.

The murder of these 4 journalists adds to the terrible statistics of the current administration, with 75 deaths affecting freedom of expression. Among the victims are 56 journalists, 5 announcers, 6 press workers, 4 relatives and 1 friend of communicators, and 3 companions.

PEN International, the PEN San Miguel Center and the Organized Guild, including the Federation of Associations of Mexican Journalists (FAPERMEX), the Latin American Federation of Journalists (FELAP-Mexico) and the National College of Graduates in Journalism (CONALIPE), are located in solidarity with the grieving families and colleagues of our murdered and missing media workers in Mexico, demanding justice.

Since 2000, 312 murders have been documented, including 258 journalists, 7 announcers, 16 press workers, 15 relatives and 10 friends of journalists, 2 civilians and 3 bodyguards. Alarming data from the permanent monitoring of the Organized Guild reveal a total of 378 murders since 1983, with 321 journalists, 7 announcers, 16 press workers, 18 relatives and 11 friends of communicators, 2 civilians and 3 bodyguards. In addition, there are 28 cases of forced disappearances pending resolution.

Impunity remains a serious concern, as it allows criminals and enemies of press freedom to evade justice.

We urge Mexico’s highest authorities to put an end to this shameful impunity and apply precautionary measures to protect journalists and press workers, as required by law. We demand justice and the implementation of protection mechanisms for journalists, their families, friends and managers who have been targets of intimidation for the entire journalistic community.

Enough is enough! This is our unwavering plea.

WE MUST safeguard freedom of the press and expression in our beloved Mexico!
