The PEN Uruguay Center shares with its partners and friends this report by PEN International prepared in conjunction with Artists at Risk Connection (ARC) and Cubalex, on the occasion of the second anniversary of the historic protests of July 11, 2021 in Havana and the rest of the country.
The report «Cuba Method» gathers the testimonies of 17 exiled artists, documenting the repressive and violent tactics used by the Cuban state to expel them from the country. The publication highlights the common repression these artists faced due to their creative expression and highlights individual artists’ stories of how they left the island and the challenges they now face in exile.
«Cuba Method» calls for the immediate release of political prisoners and all artists who are imprisoned for peacefully expressing their ideas and creative work. In addition, the report urges Latin American governments and the human rights community to investigate allegations of systematic human rights abuses against artists in Cuba, particularly with regard to restrictions on artistic freedom, arbitrary detentions, and exile. forced.
